Le Gentilhomme is a French restaurant in Sapporo city, Hokkaido. If you have had enough of sushi or Japanese food in Sapporo, which is famous for fine seafood, I recommend to try such a fine French restaurant which features food stuffs of Hokkaido. The owner chef Mr. Masato Okawa has a well experienced French chef. He used to worked several grand maisons in Paris, including Troigros, a Michelin Three Stars restaurant.
The restaurant has lunch course menus with the prices of JPY2,500/3,250/5,000. The JPY5,000 course is a chef’s special full course menu which is served for dinner at JPY7,000. I had this full course menu which consists of amuse, 1st starter, 2nd starter, fish, meat, dessert, and coffee.
Amuse : Smoked saumon, duck breast, and pâté de campagne sandwich.
1st starter : celeriac mousse. Celeriac is a subspecies of celery. The route is used for eating and it has a similar flavor as normal celery.
2nd starter : Foie gras mousse – crème brûlée style. The quality of foie gras is so nice. It’s really savory.
Main course (fish) : Sautéed sea bass topped with fried vegetables. The sauce was made of cabbage, green peas, and some herbs.
Main course (meat) : Beaf, pork, chicken, or duck at your option. I chose beaf steak with red wine sauce.
Dessert : Rhubarb jerry topped with strawberry ice cream and litchi paste.
Dessert : You can choose as much as you like from the dessert wagon.
Frankly speaking, the presentation is not so fashionable or modern. But the taste is really nice and more than satisfactory level.
The owner chef has a good hospitality. He saw us off outside of the restaurant.
